With a population of over 450,000, Sacramento has something for everyone.
The Kings and Monarchs bring excitement to basketball fans, while the River Cats and Knights draw crowds for baseball and soccer. For college fans, Sacramento State and UC Davis compete in most sports.
If you want to do more than watch local teams, the opportunities are here. The Sacramento bike trail runs 32 miles from Old Town (the home of the California State Railroad Museum and many historical buildings) to Folsom Lake. It's a scenic trail with many access points. You should also visit the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. It has 1,000 miles of waterways and is a great place for recreation: water skiing, swimming, wind surfing, fishing, house boating, bird watching, RV'ing and camping. It also has islands to explore, ferries to take, and wineries, restaurants and festivals to explore.
If you want a less strenuous outing, visit the Sacramento Zoo, Old Town or the parks, particularly Land Park, where the zoo and Fairytale Town, a treat for kids, are located; McKinley Park, with its rose bushes and recreational areas; and Discovery Park, where the American and Sacramento rivers meet. Sacramento isn't called the "River City" for nothing; scout out the picnic places along the Sacramento, American and Cosumnes rivers. You can relax on a summer day while rafting on the American River from Sunrise Boulevard in Rancho Cordova to Goethe Park in Sacramento. Or relax in the sun at Paradise Beach, off the American River near Sacramento State. If you¹re a hacker, try the golf courses at Haggin Oaks, Bing Maloney, William Land Golf Course and Bartley Cavanaugh.
Sacramento doesn't lag when it comes to culture, either. History buffs should visit Sutter's Fort, a faithful reproduction of Sacramento life in the mid-19th century, and the historic Governor's Mansion. The state Capitol's rotunda, Assembly and Senate chambers offer elegance and beauty, and the Capitol often has interesting exhibits. The city also has more than a dozen museums, each with a specialty. They include the Crocker Art Museum, the California State Railroad Museum, the California State Indian Museum, the Towe Auto Museum, the Aerospace Museum of California, the California Museum for History, Women and the Arts, and the Discovery Museum Science and Space Center. Sacramento has three symphonies - the Sacramento Philharmonic, the Sacramento Symphony and the Camellia Symphony, along with chamber music groups and an excellent public library system. There's also a lot for theater fans to choose from, including the B Street Theater, co-founded by actor Timothy Busfield and his brother, Buck Busfield, and Music Circus, which presents music theater classics in the Wells Fargo Pavilion.
Even though there's a lot going on in Sacramento, each neighborhood has its own identity. Check them out. You¹ll find an appealing variety.
