The City of Folsom lies at the base of Folsom Dam and runs between the American River and highway 50. Originally settled by gold miners and railroad workers, it is also home to the Folsom prison. If you take a walk down Sutter Street in the old part of Folsom you can imagine yourself back in the days of the gold miners with the old buildings, covered sidewalks and central landscaped median. Be sure to check out the Folsom History museum for a good explanation of how gold mining changed the geography of the area and left huge piles of river rocks behind.
Folsom´s growth in recent years has been mainly due to Intel Corporation locating here and bringing in many high paid workers. Developments such as Broadstone, Natoma Station, Lexington Hills, Empire Ranch, the Parkway & American River Canyon have added thousands of homes to the area and brought in new shopping centers and a new Folsom High School.
Recreation is close by with Folsom Lake offering boating, (folsomlakemarina.com) hiking, swimming and camping. For camping reservations call 800-444-7275 information about the lake 916-988-0205. Within the City limits enjoy the Folsom Zoo a charming small zoo which features rescued wild animals including lions and bears. You can get close to the animals and there are a lot of trees. Take the kids to the adjacent playground or in the summer for a ride on the miniature railroad which goes through the park. (located at 50 Natoma Street telephone 916-351-3527 next to City Hall) Every 4th of July the rodeo comes to town in the same park where the zoo is located. The Folsom aquatic center at 1200 Riley Street has two swimming pools including one with a water slide telephone 916-355-7200.
