One of Sacramento's newer cities Citrus Heights is an active community that enjoys many amenities. Incorporated in 1997 and located near Interstate 80 it has an abundance of services and shopping centers. Citrus Heights offers all the necessities of life to its residents. An excellent place for families looking to move up into larger more spacious homes, Citrus Heights offers home buyers large lots with big backyards. Proud of its newly acquired city status, residents formed their own historical society to keep track of, among other things, its 40-year struggle to become a city. The results of a 1998 city survey showed that two-thirds rated their quality of life as good with an even higher percentage citing city services as good or excellent.
The Sunrise Recreation Park District runs 19 parks, and offers an assortment of classes including several in-depth programs geared toward teenagers. Rusch Park the largest park provides many family activities including a weekend camp-out complete with stargazing. It is also close to the American River and both Folsom and Natoma Lakes, which provide boating, fishing, swimming and sailing opportunities.
The city is also home to Sunrise Mall one of the largest malls in the county with over 100 stores and Birdcage Center located across the street both are very popular shopping centers. The Sacramento Capitals professional tennis team plays at the Sunrise Mall.
